GBV Funding in Decline as Cases Surge in Kenya

Despite the rising number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases across Kenya, funding for prevention and response is in sharp decline, placing thousands at risk and undermining years of progress in protecting vulnerable groups—particularly women and girls.
Current statistics and community reports indicate a troubling increase in sexual and gender-based violence, especially against young women. However, survivors are left without adequate support due to weak law enforcement, underfunded programs, and a severe lack of shelters and safe spaces.
Legal frameworks do exist, but implementation remains patchy. Activists and human rights defenders are urging the government and partners to prioritize GBV response funding and ensure justice systems work for survivors—not against them.
A recent protest by young women highlighted the urgency of the issue, calling for action, accountability, and protection from violence.
